In 1947, Texas received its first four area codes: 214 (northeast Texas, including Dallas), 512 (south-central Texas, including Austin and San Antonio), 713, and 915 (El Paso). Area code 713 was specifically designated for the southeastern part of the state, covering the region from the Sabine River to the Brazos Valley, which included Houston.
